Workers Compensation
Workers Compensation Information
There’s no debating that business owners have a lot on their plate. They have to worry about finances, operations, contracts and so much more. It can be hard to focus on so many different areas, but one detail that should never be overlooked is their employees, especially when it comes to making sure they have the protections they need. One way to make sure employees are supported is by providing comprehensive workers’ compensation insurance.
What Is Workers’ Compensation Insurance?
Workers' compensation insurance can provide injured workers with medical care and compensation for a portion of the income they lose while being unable to work or having to scale back on hours or tasks due to an injury or illness suffered on the job. It can also help protect employers from lawsuits filed by employees injured while working. Workers' compensation can ensure that workers receive benefits no matter who is at fault for a workplace accident. If a worker is fatally injured, workers’ compensation can also provide death benefits for the worker’s dependents. Employers are legally required to have workers’ compensation in Ohio, but each state has its own requirements on the subject.
Ohio Workers’ Compensation Requirements
Ohio requires every employer to have workers’ compensation if they have one or more employees. However, if an employer has no employees, workers’ compensation coverage is optional. This applies to:
- A limited liability company (LLC) acting as a sole proprietor
- An LLC acting as a partnership
- Family farm corporate officers
- An individual incorporated as a corporation
- Ordained or associate ministers of a religious organization
It is important to remember, however, that if you do not choose to cover yourself, other insurances may not cover a work-related injury or disability.
